EIA Petroleum Inventories

Crude oil, gasoline, distillates and market reaction

A permanent release record for the EIA Weekly Petroleum Status Report, pairing all three headline inventory changes with consensus and the first five minutes of petroleum-market price action.

EIA

Release summary

The petroleum inventory package was broadly looser than consensus.

Crude oil: +2.011M bbl vs −1.950M bbl expected; Gasoline: +0.765M bbl vs −1.905M bbl expected; Distillate: +1.396M bbl vs +0.825M bbl expected. A larger draw or smaller build is generally tighter for the petroleum balance. This is historical context, not a trading signal.

Latest figures

Actual vs forecast

Positive values are inventory builds; negative values are draws. Figures are displayed in million barrels.

Instrument coverage

Three direct petroleum observations

WTI and Brent record the U.S. and global crude response; gasoil adds refined-product context. No separate gasoline series is shown because that instrument is not present in the stored tick archive.

WTI WTI crude oil
The primary U.S. crude-oil reference observed around the weekly petroleum inventory release.
XBRUSD Brent crude oil
The global crude-oil benchmark, included to compare the international market response.
GASOIL-C Gasoil / distillate reference
A refined-products reference that adds direct context for the distillate inventory surprise.

Market context

Why petroleum inventories move prices

The weekly package helps markets reassess crude supply, refinery demand and end-product consumption. The mix matters: crude, gasoline and distillates can point in different directions even when the headline move looks clear.

Inventory surpriseBalance expectationsRefining and demand outlookEnergy repricing
01

Crude oil stocks

A larger-than-expected draw can imply a tighter crude balance; an unexpected build can imply looser near-term supply.

02

Gasoline

Motor gasoline inventories add information about refinery output and seasonal road-fuel demand, especially during the U.S. driving season.

03

Distillates

Diesel and heating-oil stocks connect the package to freight, industrial activity, exports and winter heating demand.

04

Refinery context

Refinery runs, imports, exports and product supplied can explain why the three inventory lines diverge and whether the surprise may persist.

Consensus forecasts are not EIA estimates. Strategic Petroleum Reserve flows, Cushing stocks, refinery utilization, imports, exports and seasonal effects can matter more than one headline after the initial reaction.

Indicator guide

What the petroleum report measures

The Weekly Petroleum Status Report provides timely information on U.S. petroleum supply, inventories and selected prices for the week ending the preceding Friday.

Commercial crude oil
Crude held in commercial storage, distinct from stocks held in the Strategic Petroleum Reserve.
Motor gasoline
Finished motor gasoline and blending components held in inventory for the U.S. fuel market.
Distillate fuel oil
A product group that includes diesel and heating oil and is sensitive to freight, industrial and seasonal demand.
Build or draw
A positive weekly change is a build; a negative change is a draw. Markets compare the result with consensus, not only with zero.

Methodology

How this page is assembled

The release table preserves the actual, consensus and previous values stored with each calendar record. A snapshot is generated only after all three actual and forecast values are available and the release has settled.

The latest chart plots every stored bid tick from 30 seconds before publication through the selected horizon. Reaction percentages use the last bid before release as baseline. Timestamps are UTC; moves do not establish an executable fill, spread, slippage or profitability.
